Maria José Pinto

Has a graduate degree in the History of Art from Nova University, Lisbon and a post-graduate degree in Cultural Management from ISCTE / INDEG Lisbon. Art, travel literature and Portuguese culture are only some of her passions. She has been involved in various cultural events in Lisbon, where she has always lived, including Expo 98, an official World Fair which welcomed 11 million visitors to our country and had a tremendous impact on the development of Portugal´s economy and international exposure. As a traveler herself, she has always greatly valued more personalized tourism, which enables a closer understanding of the spirit of a place. The idea of the project Portuguese Ways was the result of this experience and the desire to offer another perspective of her country and its history and culture to its visitors.

Pedro Quaresma

Joined Portuguese Ways in 2011, the year we became members of Pure Life Experiences. The “Genealogical Tour” was his first contribution to the company's statement on the international market. Since then, he has been responsible for the relations with our partners around the globe. His main objective is to provide our partners and customers a genuine knowledge of Portugal through the history, culture, traditions, but especially through the contact between the traveller and the people who make this country a special one. Among his passions, there is the food and wine and he spares no efforts and distances to discover and share what's new and better in Portugal.

Ana Barqueiro

Has a degree in Social Communication. With a strong passion for the behind-the-scenes, she always preferred the adventure of “making things happen”, as opposed to the spotlight. Radio, Television and digital media have been part of her professional pathway, but she always felt that something was missing. For several years she soothed that dissatisfaction by planning trips for herself, to know new cultures, their history, and stories. Looking back, she now realizes that the wish to work destinations was hidden. Reflected in the secret desire of being a travel journalist or in how she would design with detail each trip that included a small backpack or a suitcase larger than her. Until the day the motto “choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life” settled unexpectedly and for every traveler’s dream accomplished, she feels her own dream fulfilling.

Vânia Jesus

With a degree in Social and Cultural Communication, taken at Universidade Católica Portuguesa, has worked in areas as distinguished as Marketing and Banking. She went on her first adventure at the young age of only 18 days, when she travelled South to Algarve with her parents. It was with them that she started exploring Portugal, until she was old enough to go on her own, armed only with a tent and a backpack. Her many travels have largely contributed to her passion for tourism and hospitality, but life has driven her away from these. This is perhaps the reason why she feels her joining Portuguese Ways has finally returning home and realising her dream. Now it all falls together.

Laura Moura

Laura Moura has been a part of our Team since 2017.
Professionally, she has always been dedicated to helping others, and through her work in Social and Community Intervention, where people and their individual needs were her main focus, she developed her already natural ability to help others by “catering” to specific needs, a trait that she successfully transferred to her new role in Portuguese Ways.
From a young age, Laura learned to recognize and appreciate Portugal’s culture, tradition and human patrimony contribution. This was aided by the fact that she often made long visits to Trás-os-Montes, a beautiful place which was once one of Portugal's most remote areas and to this day a place that has its very own unusual traditions. She has subsequently developed a tremendous interest in the stories behind the different Portuguese traditions as told by the people who still abide by them. This interest has originated several parallel projects in which she uses Photography and Personal Testimonies to showcase the life story of the people who make this country so special. Portuguese Ways gathers the best of both worlds to Laura, as she has the opportunity to individually cater to a client’s needs while making sure that she perpetuates the appreciation of our culture and tradition.

Paulo Paris

Having recently returned to Portugal after being away for 16 years, Paulo brings with him an enormous desire to show the world the reasons that led to his return. In England, where he lived before coming back home, he spent his professional career dealing directly with clients, which led to the very early realization that his true vocation is to help and communicate with people. For the past five years, he has assisted clients from all over the world to travel to the UK and stay in a Historical Castle. Now, in Portugal, he hopes to be able to do the same while showcasing all the wonderful things that made him return.

Joana Gonçalves

With a degree in Tourism, she soon discovered that what she really liked to do was organize and plan trips and events.
Although she was taken to other professional paths, she never lost her love for organizing and planning trips, whether for herself, family, or friends. Passionate about Portugal, its traditions, stories, and customs, as a result of many vacations spent in Serra da Estrela, she feels that there is a growing demand for the authenticity of places, respect and preservation of history and culture. When the invitation to join the Portuguese Ways team was made, she felt that she was finally putting her work together with what she really liked to do and that everything was now in the right place. Its main goal is to transmit to its partners and clients the love for Portugal and for all the people and places that make this country such a unique destination.

Ana Leal

Life is a long journey and our goals and dreams are reflected in the path we choose – At 45 years young, Ana has done it all - from working in Law and Accounting to performing live on stage in Musical and Theater events. During her “Journey” she has made many life changing decisions which lead to a personal, professional, and spiritual enrichment. She loves being a part of the team, which she considers family, and takes great pride in being able to help our client’s “dreams come true”.

Raul Malhado

After a stint in nursing school, he ventured into the hospitality and tourism sectors in Switzerland. These two areas, unified by a foundation of empathy and a commitment to service, often reveal the impact of a genuine (heartfelt) smile delivered at the right moment.
Upon returning to Portugal, fuelled by a deep affection for his people, rich culture, and exquisite cuisine, he continued his professional career in the hospitality industry, taking on roles as a receptionist, a concierge, a reservations management and quality control.
Now part of the Portuguese Ways team, he will continue to channel his passion for helping others by assisting our travelers as they discover the beauty of Portugal.

Portugal

Portugal is one of the oldest countries of the old continent and the gateway to Europe from the west.

Its geographical location at the crossing point between the Eastern Coast of the American Continent, Europe and Africa along with the richness of its cultural and environmental diversity, are key features that make this country “by the sea” an exceptional destination.
Portuguese territory still includes the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. This is a country where it is still possible to see 20,000 years’ worth of history, from the rupestrian rock engravings in the Côa Valley to the contemporary works of architecture in the cities. Portugal has an extensive and diverse heritage, a significant part of which has already been listed as world heritage sites by UNESCO.

PORTUGAL. One identity
Firstly throughout the lengthy period when Arabs inhabited the Iberian Peninsula and later during the Portuguese discoveries in the 15th Century, a multi-cultural aspect was introduced to the Portuguese identity that is still evident today.
Famous for its numerous sunny days throughout the year, Portugal warmly welcomes its visitors in a friendly manner and presents a wealth of aromas and flavours through its gastronomy and wine production.
The literature, music and traditional customs are still characteristically unique and are a testimony to the authenticity of a territory, relatively reduced in size, which offers a rich and diverse experience even for those who are only visiting for a few days.
HISTORY. The Discoveries
The maritime voyages undertaken by the Portuguese in the 15th & 16th centuries placed this small European country at the centre of the world’s attention and made it one of the main commercial and cultural traders. From the first journey, in 1415, till the end of the 16th century, Portugal was a pioneer in technological advances of nautical science, cartography and astronomy, building the first ships capable of sailing safely in the open sea.
The Portuguese forged ties with various parts of the world through these maritime voyages. Even today, the Portuguese language is still spoken by millions of people around the world and Portuguese architecture can be found in such faraway places as Brazil, Africa, India and Macau.
ART. Tiles (Azulejos) and Filigrana
Tiles (Azulejos) are one of the strongest expressions of the Portuguese culture and one of the most original contributions of the Portuguese genius to universal culture.

Azulejo is a Portuguese word for a ceramic, squared tile with a decorated, glazed surface. The use of Azulejos in Portugal has particular significance due to their uninterrupted application for over five centuries as a key architectural feature in covering both the interiors of buildings as well as the external facades and in the way in which they have come to be regarded over the centuries not only as decorative art but also as a reflection of changing tastes and a clear record of the Portuguese imagination.
Filigree, on the other hand, is a typical art of Portuguese jewelry. The word derives from the Latin term filum that designates thread and granum that means grain.

Used in several places in the world, this manual art of working metals grew considerably in the Mediterranean countries.
Pieces of filigree dating back to 2500 BC were discovered in Portugal. This ancient art of working gold or silver, handed down from generation to generation, is rooted in the north of Portugal. The filigree process involves a work of great skill and attention to detail of the craftsmen, a perfection that requires years of experience and dedication.

As far as Art goes, a major input came with the end of the dictatorship in the late twentieth century. From that moment on, Art became a vehicle for criticism and construction of life in the democracy, from the plastic arts to the cinema, literature, dance or music. In addition to the precious museum collections, new galleries and artistic projects appear in the main cities of the country providing the discovery of contemporary Portuguese art with its individuality, universalism, enthusiasm and passion.
LITERATURE: Fernando Pessoa and José Saramago
With the Portuguese Discoveries during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portuguese literature branched out to various parts of the world. Besides the spread of the Portuguese language, a wealth of travel literature emerged through these nautical adventures. Luís de Camões (16th century) and Fernando Pessoa (20th century) are considered the greatest Portuguese poets.
The poetical works of Fernando Pessoa have already been considered “the legacy of the Portuguese language to the world”. Complex and personalised while expressed through the different poetical voices of his heteronyms, Pessoa’s works are an outstanding phenomenon of literary composition and undoubtedly universally recognised masterpieces.
In 1998, José Saramago received the Nobel Prize for Literature. Saramago's exuberant imagination and playfulness have made him one of Portugal's most popular contemporary writers, and his works have been translated into more than 20 languages. According to the Swedish Academy, Saramago was awarded for work that ``with parables sustained by imagination, compassion and irony continually enables us to apprehend an illusory reality.”
MUSIC. Fado and Cante Alentejano
Fado is a style of Portuguese music, which expresses feelings such as love and yearning in a uniquely Portuguese way. The word Fado comes from the Latin term fatum meaning destiny. It is this invisible force that shapes our lives and is sung with deep feeling from the Portuguese soul through Fado.

Fado was born in Lisbon neighbourhoods in the nineteenth century, but 100 years were sufficed to be known around the world, through the voice of Amália Rodrigues. However, and despite the worldwide fame (Fado was classified by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011), Fado keeps alive the popular roots as it’s in the modest neighbourhoods of the city that we can find the amateur singers. Alfama and Bairro Alto are some places where even today one can find the most authentic interpreters.
Also classified as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Cante Alentejano is unique and blends with the history and soul of the Alentejo, a Portuguese region of rolling plains. Its origin isn't clear: Gregorian chant or Arabic song. But it's with the connection of the worker with the land that emerges this collective song, geographically associated with south Alentejo.

Without musical instruments, groups of men and women sing what goes into their soul, the love, the desire and the memories of the land where they were born. In the Alentejo fields, the tradition passed from generation to generation. But it also occurred when the men gathered to relax or simply to sing in the streets.
The vibrant voices of the Cante Alentejano have been heard over the centuries and continue to delight everyone, reflecting the identity and history of a community and a region.
FLAVOURS. Port Wine and Mediterranean Diet
Like Fado and Cante Alentejano, the Mediterranean Diet was also recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage of Humanity, but in this case, it was as a result of a transnational bid. Portugal, Croatia, Cyprus, Spain, Morocco, Italy and Greece teamed up. And you’ll see why!

The diet in question is inspired by the idea of healthy eating in the Mediterranean region which includes products such as olive oil, fresh vegetables, chestnuts, and also fish.
As we go back in time we learn that part of the food was brought from the countries discovered by the Portuguese and Spanish, especially in South America.

History also shows us that the Mediterranean diet involves a ritual of sharing, be it between a family, a group or a community.
It is, therefore, telling of the culture of the countries of the Mediterranean basin, including Portugal.
Another good Portuguese flavour is the famous Port wine. Port wine was born in the Douro Valley, whose vineyard landscape was considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This famous liqueur wine has a long and rich history and is produced in a peculiar way in the combination of natural and human factors. The manufacturing process, based on tradition, includes stopping the must fermentation by adding wine spirit, wine blending and aging.
